A High Court Judge in Takoradi has condemned Accra-based legal practitioners who he says are practicing their law on radio by commenting unnecessarily on issues that are before competent courts of jurisdiction thereby misleading the public to form wrong opinions. He blamed the situation for the seeming disrespect and lack of public confidence in the judiciary in recent times.Justice George Boadi was speaking at a public lecture organized by the Western Region Bar Association to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the murder of three High Court judges and an army officer.Ebenezer Afanyi Dadzie of Radio Maxx who was present at the lecture reported the judge as saying the constitution grants everybody the right to free speech, but warned legal practitioners must be wary of the comments they make in respect of legal matters in the media. He commended lawyers in the Western Region for not engaging in that act but cautioned those in Accra to put an end to the practice.“I need to say that the legal profession or the judiciary is the institution which is buried on the laws and rules which most often is quite clearly not understood by the unlearned person. Therefore when those who are members in that fraternity lend themselves out and open the door for people to make comments and make postures as if they know what they are talking about and they discuss things in that domain you are putting certain things in the minds of people..."He said most of the discussions on radio are way off what the practice is in the law and yet those comments are made with such confidence which go a long way to pollute the minds of people. He said as lawyers when you show the disrespect to the court where you practice you whittle down the foundation and that will be the harbinger for trouble.
