The Road Traffic Regulation 2012 Thursday matured into law as the 21-day grace period to raise any faults expire Thursday, after the instrument was earlier presented to parliament in May and referred to the subsidiary legislation committee.
The regulation comprehensively addresses misconduct on roads and prescribes stiffer sanctions for road offenders. For instance it clearly prohibits the use of communication devices while driving.
It goes on to add that the communication devices prohibited include bluetooth devices and mobile earpieces. Failure to comply will attract a fine not exceeding fifty penalty units or to a term of at most three months imprisonment or both.
According to Kwame Atuahene, Head of Communication at the National Road Safety Commission in an interview with Joy FM, the New Legislative Instrument has made provisions to curb speed related accidents which account for 60 per cent of all road crashes.
He said the L.I would see the installation of speed cameras on selected roads to deal with drivers who over speed. Mr Atuahene stated that the the new law, the speed-limiting devices would be fitted on all commercial vehicles to check over-speeding.
According to Mr Atuahene, one aspect of the L.I requires commercial drivers to mandatory submit themselves for road safety training .
