Garage operators and mechanics at the Kokompe Market in Takoradi are refusing to pay taxes until road in their market is repaired. The car spare parts dealers are angry with the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly over failed promises to fix the road which has been in a very bad shape for over a decade.Earlier this week, hundreds of traders at the market clashed with the Police during a demonstration to register their protest.Though the Metropolitan Chief Executive assured them work would resume immediately, he is yet to mobilize equipment to the area.Chairman of the Kokompe branch of the Ghana National Association of Garages, Joseph Oppong Sarpong told Joy News the MCE, Captain Anthony Cudjoe assured him this morning the bulldozers would move in this afternoon.Mr. Sarpong however said there is little he can do to prevent another demonstration if that fails. He also said until the road is done they can’t pay anymore taxes.Radio Maxx’s Ebenezer Afienyi Dadze reported little has changed after the demonstration few days ago.According to him, the MCE is asking for the safety of the contractors to be guaranteed before they will come and work on the roads.A fire tender was destroyed and fire service personnel assaulted in the clashes this week. The MCE said until the garage operators guarantee the safety of the contractors it will be difficult to ask them to come and work on the roads.
