The authorities of Gumani Nuri Islamic Basic School may be compelled to close it down if the classroom block, which was devastated by the recent rainstorm that hit Tamale Metropolis, is not given immediate attention. The entire classroom block had its roof destroyed during the storm. Two weeks after the incident, the school is yet to receive any support. But the school authorities say the situation demands an urgent response, describing the building in its current state as a “death trap.” Some of the students and teachers of the school who shared their frustrations with Joy News say the classrooms are no longer confortable for studies. The Head Teacher of the school, Abdul-Rahaman Ajajih-deen, told Joy News they are scheduled to begin their exams on Monday, July 16, but will be forced to close the school down if the situation remained the same. “The rainstorm which was accompanied by flood met us in school and it was very serious”, he narrated, adding, “fortunately for us, nobody was hurt.” About three years ago, the school was renovated under Millennium Development Authority’s (MiDA) school rehabilitation programme. However, the Assembly member of the Nyansegu Gumani Electoral Area, Mohammed Awal Zakaria blamed the situation partly on the contractor, accusing him for doing shoddy work. He revealed he personally advised the contractor on meeting certain contract specifications but his advice fell on deaf ears. He said he had informed the Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Alhaji Abubakari Sumani and the Tamale Metropolitan Chief, Alhaji Haruna Abdulai Friday, but they are yet to respond to the call.
