The Asemko community in the Ahanta West district was devastated by a series of coastal storms late last May. This resulted in the roof being blown off from the only 2 classrooms which the Asemko community had. In combination with the rainy season, classes had to be cancelled for several weeks without any proper shelter to learn within. After several weeks of relationship-building between the community and Free The Children, on July 2, Julie Southern the Chief Commercial officer of Virgin Atlantic, Virgin Atlantic Executives, cabin crew, a Virgin Atlantic pilot and team members came to work side by side with community members of the Asemko community of the Ahanta West district in the Western Region to put on new, solid roofing sheets to enable class to continue by the end of the week, also to fulfill the dream of the community’s Assembly Man, elders, parents, and children, Free The Children and Virgin Atlantic together broke ground on a new classroom in the dream to build a primary school for the community within the next couple of years. This project is to build new classrooms for the next stages of study after Kindergarten; therefore children of the community would not have to walk long distances to the next village to be able to continue education. The team were greeted by a troop of young dancers, wide smiles, high energy, excitement and anticipation from the residents, as they descended the hill into the community. Welcomed by the elders and chief of the community the initiation of the ground-breaking went under way with music, dancing and painting and rebuilding of the existing classroom which was destroyed; as you can see everyone was fully involved in the day’s activities; The team had their DIY skill put to the test by helping to re-build the new classrooms. Even the rain that day could not discourage them from achieving their goal.
