The independence square here in Accra is set to host thousands of Ghanaians and other foreign dignitaries including the US secretary of state Hilary Clinton as the country bids farewell to its President, John Mills. The Independence square is expected to be filled to capacity. The funeral planning committee estimates that more than 50 thousand people including President John Mahama and other visiting presidents will attend this morning’s burial service. In front of the parabolic arch at the square is a huge dais with over 500 black chairs meant for dignitaries. Flagbearers of the political parties and foreign nationals together with the family of the late president and the clergy will occupy chairs arranged on both sides of the main dais. The casket containing the remains of Professor Mills will be placed about 50 meters from the main dais. Police say only vehicles transporting visiting heads of state will be allowed entry into the inner perimeter of the independence square. Joy News’ Evans Mensah who visited the Independence Square Friday morning said activities at the event ground are bustling for the funeral service. All the roads leading to the venue have been blocked to vehicular traffic, some mourners who made their way to the Square had to trek on foot from a distance, he reports. Tributes Tributes of President John Mahama, the former First Lady and son of Professor John Evans Atta Mills will be the only ones which will be read at the funeral service. According to the funeral planning committee, this is to ensure the funeral service is as brief as possible. A member of the funeral planning committee, Nana Ato Dadzie says all other tributes will be read at the vigil which will take place after the burial service is over. The burial grounds, the Geese Park has been neatly prepared for the remains of the late president. Nana Ato Dadzie says the late president’s final resting place will be presentable and befitting. Security Meanwhile, punctuality will be key at the Independence Square as the grounds for the funeral service will be shut to the public by 9:15 am. Security would be tightened for the funeral ceremony, all expected to be present at the funeral service of the late President, John Evans Atta Mills must ensure that they are punctual to the grounds.
