The Ghana Rubber Estates Company Limited, GREL, continues to extend development projects to more communities in the company’s operational area. The company, which is committing resources into educational infrastructure and scholarships, health and other basic social amenities, is one of the few firms that have brought chiefs in its catchment area under one umbrella, to serve as a link between the inhabitants and the company.
The Association of Chiefs On Whose Lands GREL Operates (ACLANGO) is made up of chiefs from eight traditional areas from five districts where GREL operates. Within the five districts, GREL’s operations cuts across about eighty-four (84) communities who have all in diverse ways benefited from the company’s existence.
Aside the provision of social amenities, some inhabitants have gained employment with the company whilst others have cultivated rubber farms where the company buys from thereby creating wealth to improve their lives.
The company has commissioned a 10-seater KVIP for Tumentu, a community of about 500 people in the Ahanta West District. The community, which has already benefited from a school block and sports centre, had requested for the facility through the association of chiefs.
Speaking at a brief ceremony to commission the facility, the Paramount Chief of Nsein Traditional Area and Chairman of ACLANGO, Awulae Agyefi Kwame, commended GREL for its enormous contributions to the many deprived communities in the catchment area.
He however asked for more and also admonished residents in the operational area not to resort to demonstrations against the company but rather involved the chiefs in getting their grievances addressed when they have disagreements with the company.
The Deputy Human Resource and Administrative Manager of GREL, John Edoh said the initiative forms part of the company’s sustainable development policy, which seeks to assist communities where the company operates. He said this was to ensure that they maintain a harmonious rapport with the communities for their mutual benefit.
The Chief of Tumentu Nana Azia Ntoa thanked GREL for the gesture. He however says the community is now looking forward to a borehole since they have only one borehole serving the entire village.
