President John Dramani Mahama says the government will continue to observe the National Prayer and Thanksgiving Day instituted by the late President John Evans Atta Mills in 2009. The day is set aside for the various religious groups to pray for God's continuous blessing on the nation and guidance for the leaders. The observance of the day began in 2009, when the late President Mills assumed the reins of power. President Mahama gave the assurance on Thursday when members of the Women’s Aglow, Ghana paid a courtesy call on him at the Castle, Osu. The members were at the Castle to commiserate with President Mahama on the demise of President Mills and to congratulate him on his elevation to the highest office of the President. The President said the prevailing peace in the country was because of the intercessory prayers by the various religious groups which had brought God’s favour upon the country. “We cannot take the peace for granted. It is not by accident that we continue to enjoy the peace. God’s favour is upon the nation,” he said. “The highest Gross Domestic Product (GDP) we recorded last year is because God’s favour is upon us,” he said. Therefore, President Mahama said, it was important for the country to dedicate a day to thank God for His favour upon the country. He, therefore, welcomed the assurance from the Women’s Aglow to continue with their monthly intercessory prayers for the nation. The President said the late President Mills was a man of God whose faith strengthened the faith of people around him. He said as long as God’s favour was upon him, he would continue to carry out the responsibility of the country. Earlier, the President of Women’s Aglow, Mrs Dorothy Danso, assured President Mahama of the commitment of the members to continue with their intercessory prayers on the first Saturday of every month. She said for the 19 years that the Women’s Aglow had been praying for the country, the members had a covenant with God to continue to bless the country with peace and development. Mrs Danso urged President Mahama to be encouraged because God was with him and he would protect and lead him.
