The Trades Union Congress (GHANA) wishes to express deep concern over the events in South Africa's Lonnim Marikana Platinum Mine leading to the horrid massacre of 34 striking miners by the police in South Africa.
It is abhorring and objectionable that this barbaric act of murder of striking workers should occur in post-apartheid South Africa. This represents highest manifestation of abuse of workers' rights. The TUC condemns the violent turn out of this dispute and attendant death of mine workers whose only offence was exercising their right to strike for improved working conditions.
The TUC extends deepest condolences and sympathies to the families who lost love ones and the Mineworkers Unions of South Africa and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU). We wish our injured comrades speedy recovery.
We affirm our solidarity with and support for our comrades in South Africa and welcome an open enquiry instituted into the circumstances that led to this regrettable event. All those found culpable must be made to answer. We urge our comrades in COSATU not to despair in the struggle to protect and promote the interest of workers.
Kofi Asamoah,
Secretary General.
