Anti-Corruption advocacy group, Ghana Integrity Initiative says it is unhappy with the scanty financial report submitted by the Funeral Planning Committee of late President Mills.
The Chairman of the Committee, Kofi Totobi Quakyi told journalists at a press conference held Monday that a total of GH¢3.6 million was spent on the funeral activities. According to the Chairman, total monetary donations amounted to GH¢2.2 million with government having to borne the rest of the expenditure.
Mr. Totobi Quakyi added that the expenditure was spent on hospitality for heads of state and foreign delegations, printing of tributes, order of service, pictorial book on the late President, cost of repairs and painting at funeral grounds, construction of a special dais at the Independence Square, hiring of chairs and canopies, paying of honorarium to musicians and cost of casket etc.
However, Executive Secretary of GII, Vitus Azeem in an interview with Joy News Monday said he was not enthused about the report submitted by the Committee saying that the Committee must rather make available a more detailed report itemizing the expenditure on the funeral activities.
Mr. Azeem stated that, submitting a broad figure of expenses incurred was not accountable enough. He said, to ascertain the veracity of the report, the Committee must have the report audited.
A member of the Committee, Nana Ato Dadzie who also spoke to Joy News said at the appropriate time the accounts would be audited by the Auditor General as indicated by the Public Service Regulations.
According to him, the report has been forwarded to the Chief of Staff since the Committee was established by President Mahama.
Nana Ato Dadzie said it’s not within the domain of the committee to make public the itemized financial report since it has been forwarded to the Chief of Staff who has the sole mandate of making the report public.
