The council of religious bodies will today, Tuesday meet with all political parties in the country to discuss some issues that have the potential to undermine the nation’s peace in the run up to the December polls.JOYNEWS has learnt the council will also touch on the creation of new constituencies. The body is made up of the leadership of Christian, Muslim and other religious bodies in the country. The creation of some 45 new constituencies has become a contentious issue with the Minority in Parliament, the opposition New Patriotic Party and civil society and religious groups urging caution. The Majority side of the House and the Electoral Commission have, however, insisted the constituencies will be created. The governing National Democratic Congress has already held primaries and selected Parliamentary candidates for the Constituencies.Opponents of the creation of the constituencies say it is wrong to be creating new constituencies barely two months to the general elections.A Constitutional Instrument that will give legal backing to new constituencies has just been laid in Parliament and will require 21 sitting days to mature into law.The CI itself was a subject of divisive, rancorous debate, leading to it being withdrawn and relaid several times.Tuesday's meeting with the political parties is expected to seek to build consensus on the subject.
