Striking consultants at the Komfo Anokye Teaching hospital (KATH) have suspended their strike following an emergency meeting held Monday morning.A special committee has been set up by the Minister of Health, Alban Bagbin to examine and address the grievances of the doctors.Spokesperson of the striking consultants, Dr. Frank Ankobeah who confirmed this to Luv News’ Erastus Asare Donkor, said it is their hope that the committee and the government would “not renege” on their promise to address their concerns. He told Luv News that the doctors have “decided to go back and work to give negotiation a chance”.The Chief Executive Officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, who is the direct employer of the striking consultants, has duly been informed by the doctors of their decision to return to work, Dr Ankobeah noted. The consultants withdrew their services over an unpaid 8-month extra duty allowances a fortnight ago. The government is reported to have released over 470,000 to the doctors.According to Dr Ankobeah, the decision was also informed by calls on them by the Vice Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, some dignitaries and the good people of Ghana. The consultants' next line of action would depend on the outcome deliberations with the committee set up by the Health Minister to over the matters.“What it means is that we are back to work, we are back to full time work. But then we are still waiting upon the committee to come out with how our grievances are going to be addressed, how we are going to have a lasting solution to all the problems that cultivated in this action,” Dr Ankobeah noted.Meanwhile, Eratus Asare Donkor reports that the emergency ward of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital was empty Monday afternoon, probably because most patients were unaware of the resumption of duty by the consultants.
