Asamoah Gyan scored the opening spot kick to help Al Ain win the 2012 UAE Super Cup 5-4 in a pulsating penalty shoot out against Al Jazira on Monday. The Ghana striker banished all fears over his efficiency from the spot by stepping up first to coolly slot home in the high tension penalty shoot-out – displacing the goalkeeper in the process. This was after a barren scoreline after 90 minutes of highly entertaining soccer in Dubai.Gyan, 26, however failed to get onto the scoresheet despite being impressive throughout and having a 68th minute strike ruled out for offside. The former Udinese, Rennes and Sunderland hitman played as a decoy for most parts of the game for strike partner Keenbo who was very wasteful in front of goal.Al Ain could also count themselves very lucky for not falling behind as their defence gifted glorious opportunities to Al Jazira’s Oliveira but he failed to make them pay.The game then proceeded straight to penalties after with Gyan taking the opening kick and setting the tone for an Al Ain win ushering them into the new UAE season.
