The Eastern regional Police Command has confirmed that all persons arrested for disrupting a wedding ceremony at the Koforidua Central Assemblies of God on Saturday, have been released on bail while investigations continues.Eastern regional Police Commander, DCOP Kwabena Gyamerah Yeboah told Adom News the suspects were arrested on suspicion of beating a policeman, and if enough evidence is gathered against them, they will be hauled to court to face the law.The wedding ceremony between Dennis Ofosu Sarpong and Joyce Antwi turned sour when excessive noise by friends of the groom prompted the officiating pastor to call in the police to restore order.DCOP Gyerah Yeboah said information available to the Police indicated the groom had noisily disrupted a wedding two weeks ago at Adawso close to Koforidua, and the youth of the town were bent on paying him back at his wedding.However, police say it became necessary to arrest the suspects when a police man was beaten and had his shirt torn while attempting to arrest one of the young men.According to DCOP Gyamerah Yeboah the officiating Minister, Rev. Alex Amankwa has been assisting the police in their investigations.Adom News’ Maxwell Kudekor reported earlier that, attempts by friends of the groom to pour the traditional water on him, known as ‘ponding,’ as well as excessive noise by friends and family of the groom prompted the officiating pastor to call in the police to restore order.The groom’s friends maintained that he was notorious for doing same to others at their weddings, and it was now payback time.However, the Pastor’s action rather worsened the situation.Two policemen in mufti were initially called to the scene. However, when the youth resisted the attempt to arrest them, reinforcements were called in to assist in the arrest.The well-armed reinforcements, numbering over ten, according to eyewitnesses, started firing shots in the air and eventually succeeded in arresting three of the youngmen. They have since been released on bail.Meanwhile Rev. Alex Amankwa is slated to hold a press conference later this week to tell his side of the story.
