A human right advocate is advocating full inquiry into the death of a suspect in police custody in Kumasi in the Ashanti region.
25 year old Yaw Boakye stabbed himself to death at the weekend while he was at the Buffalo Unit of the police service waiting to be charged with an offence.
The deceased is yet to be identified by his family but Project Officer at the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative Mina Mensah says police musts take responsibility for the death of the suspect.
“At the end of the day even if he is not handcuffed, it is assumed that someone is watching over him. The bottom line is that an enquiry would be conducted so that we find out what happened….The public has to know,” Mina Mensah maintained.
But the buffalo unit commander DSP Joseph Nyarba told Joy News his unit cannot take responsibility for the death.
“Somebody had broken a louvre blade and stabbed himself; we will not take any responsibility for his action. If somebody draws a knife, who will get closer to him?...People even die in police cells, if they commit suicide you cannot say that the police is responsible for his death,” DSP Nyarba stated.
