Teachers of the Osu Presbyterian Senior High School are embarking on a strike, this time, not to settle issues with the government on Single Spine Salary Scheme which has become the basis of many strike actions this year, but rather to have their headmistress removed from office. They say the presence of the headmistress does not provide a conducive atmosphere for teaching and learning.“The Headmistress must go else no teaching”, “GES we need our report”, “We need change now” and “Autocracy must end now” are some inscriptions on placards that have been mounted at the entrance of Osu Presec.Since school re-opened on the 17th of September, the School has not seen any effective teaching as teachers have refused to teach until the headmistress of the school is removed from office for various reasons. Some teachers the JOYNEWS TV team met at the school were clad in red bands to show how serious they are with the strike, which they say was necessitated by the slow pace at which authorities are attending to the issue.“We have used all democratic means to get the issue resolved but we are not getting any results so we have decided to embark on a strike ’’, said an Economics teacher at the school. The teachers say the headmistress has been assaulting them both verbally and physically in the presence of students.According to Esther Adutumwaa Appiah, a ceramics teacher, the headmistress slapped a teacher last term and the case landed at the Osu Police Station. She added that “A whole lot of things have been going on in this school just that we don’t complain but now we can’t take it anymore, we have to come out and voice it out”.Students in a meeting held earlier in Wednesday, cautioned that if the teachers do not return to the classroom by Friday they will also embark on a demonstration. Most students were gathered in groups on the compound whilst others were in the classrooms trying to study on their own.A student, Asamoah Isaac said “It’s almost two weeks of no teaching. We the students are neutral people. What we want is that we reported to school and the teachers have a duty to come to class and teach us.”
He added that something must be done to resolve the issueThe headmistress, Diana Dennis Welbeck was not present to comment on the issue. Our News team also went to the Presby Educational Unit of the Ghana Education Service but was told the manager and her assistant were both indisposed. The teachers are also asking for the report of investigations carried out by the Ghana Education Service before the previous term ended.
