Waste management giant, Zoomlion Ghana Limited has introduced electronic automation in its waste collection system, with the installation of wireless devices on bins, to improve revenue collection. Beginning November this year, all waste bins distributed to homes will be tagged with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) readers which will be linked to a central point, to track transactions undertaken by agents contracted by Zoomlion to collect revenue on its behalf. Further to this, trucks distributed by Zoom Alliance which coordinates activities of registered waste collectors as well as uniforms worn by their officers, will also be tagged with the RFID readers to track every movement of the vehicles and the officers, in order to curtail revenue losses. Managing Director for Zoom Alliance Adje Boatrng Adjei disclosed at a concept seminar for Zoom Alliance stakeholders in Accra on Thursday that the move was to minimize the level of revenue losses recorded by waste collectors in their operational zones. Zoom Alliance provides the platform for waste management operators to come under one umbrella and maximize resources in solving the country’s sanitation challenges, under the partnership of the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development. The partners are responsible for managing operations of the agreed zones for the alliance partnership. Mr. Adjei noted that the electronic revenue collection system which also includes an e-card payment system, will also reduce confrontations between clients and revenue collectors after the service had been performed. He explained that when the system becomes operational, payments made at every point will immediately be communicated to the central point and the amount entered, which will enable the clients to personally crosscheck their records to avoid confrontations. He said more contractors were expected to be signed on, to strengthen the partnership to properly manage waste collection in the country.
