A former Director General of the Ghana Education Service, Michael Nsowah has criticized the NDC’s promise to build more teacher training colleges across the country as not being the panacea to the shortage of teachers in the country. President Mahama during the launch of the NDC’s manifesto announced his government’s plans to establish 10 new Teacher Training Colleges throughout the country in its second term. This, according to him is to help train more teachers and bridge the perennial deficit of teachers in most public schools of the country. But speaking on Joy FM’S News Analysis programme, Newsfile, Mr. Nsowah said the way forward should rather be improving the welfare of teachers rather than increasing the number of training colleges. According to him, considerable number of teachers produced by the training colleges “disappears” from the system after two or three years; a situation he said has to be rectified. He also said, currently, most training colleges are under utilizing their infrastructure, not admitting enough students a situation he added needs to be tackled before further infrastructure expansion is done.
