Aggrieved residents of Tamale in the Northern region have again petitioned the Regional Coordinating Council over alleged faulty prepaid meters installed in some houses in the metropolis. Earlier Tuesday, scores of them took to the streets to register their protest over what they say is the reluctance of the Volta River Authority to replace the meters. The Northern Electricity Distribution Company, NEDcO which is replacing all postpaid meters across the region has come under attack in Tamale for removing the post-paid meters and replacing them with pre-paid meters. Last month some of the aggrieved residents threatened to forcibly remove the meters and attack any NEDcO staff who ventured to stop their move, compelling traditional authorities and the Metropolitan Chief Executive to intervene. But the residents say the company is still adamant. They want the meters removed by the company. The spokesperson of the Progressive Citizens of Tamale Alhassan Mohamed Afiz told correspondent, Matina Bugri, “If the meters are not removed, there is nothing to talk about in terms of fixing this problem; the first step in fixing this problem is the meters to be removed so that we can have the assurance that [the issue will be resolved]”. He accused NEDcO of failing to test the meters before installing them in homes in Tamale. The group later presented a petition to the Northern regional Minister, Moses Bukari Mbengba who appealed to them to exercise restraint while he pursues measures to address their concerns. Meanwhile the Northern Electricity Distribution Company is expressing surprise at the Development. Director for Northern Operations of the VRA, Frank Akligo, however, said they will continue to engage with stakeholders to address the matter.
