Minister of lands and natural resources, Mike Hammah, has tasked the National Lands Commission to provide a report on why a directive to suspend the allocation of public lands in the greater Accra Region has been contravened.
He explained “in February 2011, we had cause to, on behalf of the president… direct the Lands Commission to suspend allocation of public lands until further notice. Information available to me indicates that this directive has been contravened. I therefore and hereby direct the National Lands Commission to submit a detailed report on such allocations so far within two weeks”
In an interview with Joy News, Mike Hammah, bemoaned that fact that despite ongoing land administrative reforms, investors and those who seek to acquire land continue to experience poor land service delivery that are occasioned by delays, conflicts claims, attendant legal suit and pervasive public sector land administration inefficiencies.
He said despite interventions and the huge amounts invested in making things work, land administration is still mired with a myriad of problems, many of which are the results of human frailties.
He advised , “the bottlenecks should be a thing of the past, with the combined technical skills available in the Land Commission now”.
The passage of the lands commission act 2008, brought together under one management four agencies which hitherto had existed and operated as individual units. Now the public lands management division, Land registration division, survey and mapping division and the land valuation division are integrated at both the national and regional levels.
Mike Hammah stressed that land plays a critical role in providing the base for many of the interventions for national development.
It has been observed that efficient and effective land administration is an essential element for sustainable and accelerated development.
