A 32-year-old farmer in the Kwabre East District of the Ashanti Region is demanding justice after police shot him and left him to his fate as he struggles seek medical attention.Kwadwo Frimpong was shot two months ago by personnel of Kasaam police who were detailed to arrest him for allegedly stealing a tuber of yam from his uncle’s farm.He had since resorted to herbal treatment for the deteriorating gun-shot wound in his sole because he could not afford hospital charges.Frimpong believes police are unduly aiding his uncle to silence him in a litigation over a piece of land, and not just the stolen yam.Kwadwo Frimpong’s uncle lodged a complaint against him on suspicion he had stolen the uncle’s yam.He admitted during police interrogation he had harvested the uncle’s yam for food because he was hungry, but was prepared to pay for it.According to him, one armed policeman identified only as Asamoah and two others from the Community Protection Unit, stormed his house apparently to arrest him late in the night. A struggle ensued, during which he was shot.After the incident, Kwadwo Frimpong was rushed to the Asonomaso Hospital and later referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.Nearly two months after the incident he carries a gaping wound he tries to heal with herbs after police gave him Ghc10 when he sought their assistance.Asonomanso Police Station Officer, Inspector Adu Gyamfi, confirmed the story but said the suspect pulled a gun at the personnel who went to arrest him, forcing them to fire back.He alleged after police shot him, the suspect limped into the bush to hide his weapon which has since not been found.Inspector Gyamfi, who declined to speak on record was unable to say if any charges had been preferred against Frimpong, who disputes the police claim.Assemblyman for Kasaam, George Ofori Nantwi, said a search at the scene by CID personnel and local volunteers failed to establish the suspect carried a gun, as police suggest.Kwadwo Frimpong is appealing to the relevant authorities to intervene to help him cure the gunshot wound and also give him justice.
