Two witnesses failed to provided the necessary documents concerning the payment of judgment debts, leading to an earlier than expected closure of Monday's judgment debt hearing. The sole commissioner tasked with the responsibility of investigating the judgment debt saga adjourned hearing following the failure by witnesses to present essential documents. Justice Yaw Appau dismissed the two witnesses, Deputy Auditor General Yaw Agyei Sefa and Solicitor General Ama Gaisie, and directed them to provide the necessary documentation covering judgment debt payments in their next appearance. The Appeals Court judge is expected to shed light on judgment debt payments since 1992, including the controversial payments made to businessman Alfred Woyome, but his mandate has brought its share of challenges. On day one of the hearing, key witnesses failed to appear in court, forcing the commissioner to threaten to invoke his powers of subpoena. After almost a month, hearing continued Monday but not much was achieved. Yaw Agyei Sefa, who appeared before the Commissioner, said he needed more time to gather together all the reports being demanded. He reported difficulties procuring copies of some of the documents and reports but that he intends to make them available at his earliest convenience. Joy News’ Anny Osabutey, who was present at the hearing, reported that Solicitor General Ama Gaisie claimed to have had difficulty understanding what the commission meant by documents covering ‘civil action.’ She also pleaded to be given time to provide the required documents. Hearing continues Tuesday with the Chief Director of Finance expected to make an appearance.
