President John Dramani Mahama has announced that his administration will "seriously" pursue and implement an "aggressive" housing scheme for Ghana’s security personnel. Consequently, he said, Parliament is currently considering proposals by both foreign and local companies to construct housing units for the security personnel. President Mahama made this announcement Thursday at a meeting with the Armed Forces Council at the Ministry of Defense in Accra. By virtue of his former position as the Vice-President, Mr Mahama had been the Chairman of the Armed Forces Council for the past four years. Thursday’s meeting was his last meeting with the members of the Council. Vice-President Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur is due to take over as the Chairman of the Armed Forces Council. The meeting was held in the interest of deliberating on a few issues regarding the enhancement of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF). President Mahama used the occasion to swear in a new member of the Council, Rear Admiral (Rtd.) Jonathan Adoko. He noted that accommodation is one of the challenges facing the security services and indicated that the government intends to provide decent accommodation for them. "It is the determination of my government during its first tenure to seriously pursue and implement an aggressive housing scheme for the security personnel," he said. The President said the government, as part of its Better Ghana Agenda during the administration of President John Evans Atta Mills, provided extensive military equipment, aircrafts, naval vessels and other platforms to enable the armed forces to perform their constitutional mandate of providing security for the citizens.
