Traders of Makola market have been living in constant fear following rumours circulating that some people are preparing to burn the market, and have therefore appealed to the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to beef up security.
Nana Kraku Ohene, Leader of the Cloth Sellers’ Association in the market who confirmed this to the Ghana News Agency said some rumours come true occasionally and since they did not know whether this particular rumour was going to happen or not, the national security and AMA should beef up their security personnel in the market.
She said, “We are scared when we heard this serious allegation because of the strange market fires that had become rampant in the country”.
Mr Justice Amarlia Tetteh, Chairman of the Second Hand Cloth Sellers’ Association at Makola also told the GNA that, “we were hardly hit victims of Makola Market fires in 2002 and 2007 loosing millions of Ghana Ceids worth of properties.
“When we hard of the rumours we quickly alerted our securities in “TS” section of the market to be more vigilant especially on Sundays when the market had not opened”, he emphasized.
When the GNA contacted the Public Relations Officer of the AMA, Numo Blafo III, he gave the assurance that effective measures would be put in place to protect property and appealed to the traders to go about their normal business without fear.
