The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has given hawkers and traders operating at unauthorized places in the metropolis two weeks to voluntarily relocate.
A press statement signed by Metropolitan Coordinating Director Solomon Asiedu said the assembly would embark on a massive decongestion exercise by throwing out those who chose to remain on the pedestrian walkways that they have virtually taken over.
According to the press release, the KMA will do everything it can to ensure free movement of people and vehicular traffic.
Areas where the exercise will be carried out include the entire Central Business District, the front part of the Kumasi Central Market, Kejetia Lorry Terminal, PZ Area, Bantama Main Street and Market, Suame Roundabout and Kronum.
The release directed cargo trucks that load and offload foodstuffs at unapproved places at Bantama to also move to the Abinkyi Market.
It also asked the Metro Mass Transit buses and other heavy-duty truck operators to leave the Central Business District for the Abinkyi Market before February 4, 2013.
