Controversial hiplife musician A-Plus says he will run for Parliament in next year’s general elections. The artiste who confirmed this in an interview with Myjoyonline.com Thursday said he will run for the Gomoa East Parliamentary seat in the 2012 elections as an independent candidate. A-Plus has over the years been tagged as a New Patriotic Party (NPP) sympathiser after a series of controversial political singles and an open declaration of support for NPP flag-bearer in the 2008 general elections, Nana Akufo-Addo. Born Kwame Asare-Obeng, A-Plus said his reason to vie for the seat as an independent candidate is that he does not intend to meddle in the NDC and NPP politics, stating, “I want to be independent-minded if I get the opportunity to go to parliament.” According to him, “Being an MP will create an opportunity for the people to know that the destiny of this country is not in the hands of political parties but intelligent people who have Ghana at heart. We must make the people aware that you don’t need to be a member of a political party to be able to serve mother Ghana.” A-Plus stressed that Ghana needs people with vision who are ready to serve. People who won’t go to parliament and be comfortable driving 4x4s while the people who voted for them still farm with hoes and cutlasses. Citing examples, A-Plus said America has a population of about 300 million people of which only one million are farmers “but they are able to feed America and export some food to Ghana where there are 20 million farmers out of the 25 million Ghanaians,” and we still import agricultural produce. With these statistics, he quizzed “what kind of human beings are we?” He emphasized that the system needs to change and he hopes to bring that change to his constituents.
