The All-African Students’ Union (AASU), has resolved at its recent member unions meeting held in Accra that it is repositioning itself with the view to providing a clear vision for the future of the Africa student. The meeting, which took place at the University of Ghana from the 4th to 7th of August 2010, was attended by 10 African countries - Zimbabwe, Togo, Gambia, Uganda, Cote D’ivoire, Benin, Sierra Leone, Namibia and Rwanda and host Ghana. The organisation which has been in existence since 1972 is the main uniting body for students across Africa. The four-day meeting ended with a call on governments and leaders of member countries to create the enabling environment for young people to engage and participate meaningfully in national and continental development. AASU strongly condemned the victimization of student leaders across the continent and called for an immediate end to those tendencies. Management of institutions and political leaderships were also called upon to embrace youth and student unions as partners in the development of their respective nations. The union further called on governments to assist their students in contributing their quota to the development of the African continent. Participants took cognizance of the difficulty within which most of their member unions operate, observing that disagreements with the political leadership and management of institutions of their respective countries largely account for this. They also called on the African Union to be more proactive so as to put an end to the war ravaging Somalia and also resolve the political stalemate in Zimbabwe, Ivory Coast and other countries to ensure that there is a lasting peace in Africa which is critical for development. Whiles the AASU used the occasion to call for the withdrawal of diplomatic immunities granted its former President and Secretary General and any other former executives, they reaffirmed and extended the mandate of a five member committee led by the acting secretary general to ensure that congress is convened between November 2010 and February 2011.
