Ghana’s Defence Minister and outgoing Director of IT and Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Edward Omane Boamah, has claimed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is desperately trying to avoid a fresh electoral defeat in the Ablekuma North Constituency.
His comment follows the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to re-run elections in 19 polling stations within the constituency, a move that has sparked renewed political tension.
In a Facebook post on Friday, 4 July, Dr Boamah welcomed the EC’s decision but questioned its timeliness and sufficiency, describing it as “a delay in coming.”
He expressed concerns about the broader implications of such delays, asking: “We’re left questioning what this means for the future of our democracy.”
The NDC stalwart further stated, “The NPP is struggling to avoid another defeat,” signalling the party’s growing confidence in reclaiming the seat.
Dr Boamah also reiterated the NDC’s stance on electoral reforms, stressing the party’s commitment to upholding electoral integrity. “We in the NDC remain committed to ensuring the integrity of the electoral process,” he noted.
He called for systemic reforms at the EC, urging stakeholders to “fix the broken Electoral Commission and improve our electoral process to ensure free, fair, and transparent elections.”
