Aspiring parliamentary candidates in the Ablekuma West Constituency were Friday afternoon in a battle of wits in yet another debate organised by the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers and the Centre for Democratic Development. The rationale was to enable their constituents assess the preparedness of their candidates and to make an informed choice. The New Patriotic Party candidate, Ursula Owusu said “one of the major health concerns that i have identified has to do with malaria and its prevalence here. “We can resolve that problem first by dealing with the sanitation problem in this constituency. “We need to construct storm drains to deal with the problem of flooding in the low lying areas. She added that people undertake more hygienic practices in their homes and the communities. Her opponent from the ruling National Democratic Congress Victoria Hammah said “the NDC and the Ablekuma West approach to health is to have a public awareness and public education that will lead to prevention.” She identified sanitation as a major problem in the constituency adding that cholera, malaria and tetanus will be dealt with under her leadership. She also lamented what she said is “economic exclusion” of people with disability saying she will support such people from the constituency every month to make a living. Daniel Nii Noi of the PNC spoke about what his party will do on health for the disabled. The NDP candidate Magnus Bekoe promised to improve the health of people in the area. But the PNC and NDP candidates had some interesting stuff as they struggled to express themselves well. They would rather communicate in the local language claiming that was the language their constituents would understand.
