Church service at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle branch of the Word Power Pentecostal Ministries was last Sunday thrown into confusion when a policeman resisting arrest on charges of fraud, sought refuge in the church.
Lance Corporal Samuel Owusu was escaping from some police officers who were pursuing him for allegedly swindling a woman of ¢30 million.
Some church members rallied to the aid of the suspect, who deserted his post after the complainant had pursued him for her money.
The suspect had told some members of the congregation that the Police Administration was looking for him for resigning from the Ghana Police Service last month.
The officers, however, quelled the resistance from the congregation, arrested Owusu and handed him over to the Nima Police Station.
According to the police, Owusu had agreed that some money belonging to the woman, identified only as Ms Braimah, be transferred into his account at Berekum in the Brong Ahafo Region.
Owusu, after releasing two tranches of ¢9 million and ¢13 million to the complainant, declined to release the third tranche of ¢30 million after withdrawing it from the account.
The complainant allegedly reported Owusu's conduct to his superiors at the Nima Police Station, after he had persistently refused to give her the money.
When Owusu got to know that his superiors had been made aware of his refusal to give Ms Braimah her money, he abandoned his post without any notice.
When the Daily Graphic contacted the Nima Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent Angwubutoge Awuni, he confirmed the incident and said he had submitted a report on Owusu's desertion to the Police Headquarters and was awaiting response.
He explained that since Owusu's conduct was criminal, the police were prosecuting him for defrauding by false pretences.
