Statistics available at the Western Regional Road Safety Commission indicate that a total of 87 accident cases were recorded during the first quarter of this year compared with 142 recorded during the same period last year.During the same period, 120 vehicles were involved in the accidents as against 180 last year while 12 fatalities were recorded compared with 19 the previous year.A total of 35 serious cases have been recorded in the first quarter of this year as against 52 during the first quarter of last year while minor cases that have been recorded during this quarter is 35 as against 71 last year.The number of persons killed this quarter is 13 as against 27 in the previous year's while the number of persons injured is 65 as against 219 in the first quarter of 2007.The Regional Co-ordinator of the NRSC, Mr Thomas Bismark Boakye, told the Daily Graphic in an interview in Takoradi that there had been improvement in the statistics in the first quarter of this year as compared with that of last year.He attributed the situation to the ongoing road safety campaign, which was getting down well with the people."Because the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service has been very effective on the roads, almost 80 percent of the commercial drivers are adhering to the road safety regulations," Mr Boakye emphasised.According to him, the commission had visited a number of organisations, such as African Mining Service '(AMS), the Volta River Authority, the Takoradi Port, to sensitise the workers to road safety regulations.He added that the commission would inaugurate a road safety club at the Holy Child Training College in Sekondi by the middle of next month as part of the campaign on road safety.Mr Boakye announced that the commission would celebrate the second road safety week in the region from the end of June, this year to the second week of July.He said the commission would continue to promote best road safety practices for all categories of road users.Mr Boakye, therefore, called on all stakeholders to take active interest in the programme towards reducing accidents in the region to the barest minimum.Credit: Daily Graphic
