The rotary club of Accra, Kanda with the aim of creating sanitary consciousness, has donated some veronica buckets, hand washing soaps as well as napkins to the Kanda AMA basic school.
The donation, led by the Rotarian president, RP Henrietta Oppong, is a part of the club’s projects for the year and a part of its mandate to help the community become a better place.
RP Henrietta, on behalf of the club, said they were making the donation in recognition of the importance of sanitation, especially amongst children.
“You know when one person gets infected, it affects all the children’, she said.
Demonstrating how to use the sanitary buckets, Miss Oppong especially encouraged the children to wash their hands thoroughly after they had visited the lavatory.
She also promised the school intermittent monitoring of the donated items to track effective usage and maintenance.
The headmistress of the school, Mrs. Debuo, expressing gratitude for the gesture, said that it would go a long way to enhance the sanitation in the school.
“It will help my people to be healthier, which will go a long way to impact teaching and learning”, she said.
Making reference to Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist, Mrs. Debuo used the opportunity to put across other needs of the school.
“If you can give me a playing ground for my kindergarten,” she requested. She also said the school needed a projector as well as a printer to aid in teaching and learning.
Some of the students also expressed gratitude and excitement at their new innovative buckets. The Girls' Prefect, Sarah Behuor was certain that hand washing would be made much easier now. She also gave her assurance as a leader that the items would be taken care of.
The donation team was accompanied by veteran musician Rex Omar who is an executive of the club as well as other executives.
The rotary club is a group of professionals who have come together to do humanitarian work with the aim of giving back to society. The Kanda branch has embarked on a number of projects including a donation of food items, used clothing, sanitary materials and others to the Royal Seed orphanage last year.
