Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, says the government is taking a cautious approach to the proposed Accra–Kumasi expressway project to avoid cost overruns and design errors that could delay implementation.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Super Morning Show, the Minister explained that the government is currently completing detailed feasibility studies, design work and costing for the nearly 200-kilometre stretch, before moving contractors to the site.
According to him, the decision is aimed at ensuring that the final project cost presented to the public reflects the true scope of work and does not require future revisions.
“We want to take time to make sure that when we come out and say we need X amount of money to build the about 200km from Accra to Kumasi, we don’t come back and tell you that we want to double that money simply because we made a mistake,” Mr Agbodza said.
He noted that rushing the process without proper technical preparation could lead to avoidable financial and logistical challenges during construction.
Providing timelines, the Roads and Highways Minister said the final draft of the feasibility, design and costing documents is expected between May and June, with an allowance up to July or August to address any omissions or additional requirements.
“We are expecting the final draft somewhere May, June, but we are giving ourselves July, August, just in case there’s something they missed or something we need to add,” he explained.
Mr Agbodza added that once the preparatory work is completed, the project should commence by mid-year, following the procurement and award of contracts.
