Dr. Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, Mayor of the Accra Metropolis, has explained that his frequent outings to help direct traffic flow at points notorious for heavy congestions, is aimed at improving national productivity.
He said it is painful to see motorists and workers stuck in traffic for several hours on their way to and from work, wasting precious time they would otherwise have devoted to some productive ventures.
According to Alfred Vanderpuije, time is a very key factor of production and cannot continue to be wasted in a nation seeking to better itself.
He was speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem programme and admitted that some traffic lights may not be working in certain areas owing to ongoing construction works, however that should not cost commuters to make them sit for three hours in traffic on their way to work and three hours on their way home.
His interventions started one month ago, have taken him to the Sakaman – Mallam road; Kaneshie – Mortuary Road, and the High Street where he says traffic flow has since improved tremendously.
Asked if he is the one to do the job on the streets or he must instruct his officers, he said the job of controlling traffic is the collective responsibility of the police and city authorities.
He said he cannot be a leader by locking himself up in his office just signing letters or instructing others, explaining that sometimes leadership is more effective when it is reflected in examples.
The mayor said some workers are even more inspired to give of their best when they see their leaders in action, explaining that since he left the Sakaman spot and the police took over, commuters have expressed great satisfaction at the pace of traffic flow.
