The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) says the explosion at the Achimota Substation resulting in total darkness in the nation's capital, is unusual.
Residents in most parts of Accra slept in darkness following the explosion that occurred Wednesday night. The outage reached as far as Tema and parts of the Akuapim range.
Head Public Relations at GRIDCo, Albert Quainoo told Joy FM's Super Morning Show host Kojo Yankson on Thursday that, the situation has been coupled by another fault on one of its lines at East Legon the same day.
The development means power distributors, Electricity Company of Ghana is left very little (54 megawatts) power to supply the entire Accra East region. The power lost is estimated at about 200 megawatts.
"The lines are not available to supply ECG networks [with power]...Until we bring those lines into operation we'll all have to go through this inconvenience," Mr. Albert Quainoo stated.
He was unable to give a definite timeline for which power will be restored to consumers.
According to him, engineers from his outfit are working round the clock to restore power to consumers adding that, the situation "is very unusual".
"I don't remember the last time the whole of Accra went of like that," he said.
Myjoyonline.com's checks reveal that Achimota, Dzorwulu, Osu, Adenta, Madina, parts of Kasoa, Abeka and Tema are the most affected areas.
