As part of activities marking the build-up to the Achimota School Centenary in 2027, the Old Achimotan Association (OAA) has rolled out a 24-month calendar of sporting events, with tennis competitions slated for January 2026 and February 2027.

This year’s Inter-School Alumni Tennis Competition was staged at the Accra Lawn Tennis Club on Saturday, January 31, 2026, bringing together alumni from some of Ghana’s most prestigious secondary schools for a celebration of sport, tradition and fellowship.

In a bid to rekindle old rivalries and restore a cherished legacy, the OAA revived the famous Triangular Games, a popular inter-school fixture in the 1970s and early 1980s. The event served as a pilot initiative, inviting alumni of that era with plans already underway to scale it into a larger annual inter-school competition.

Schools represented included Achimota School, Mfantsipim School, Adisadel College, Wesley Girls’ High School, Holy Child School, Presbyterian Boys’ School (PRESEC) Legon and Aburi Girls’ School, all of whom turned out in impressive numbers to make the competition a success.

On the courts, PRESEC Legon stamped their authority early, sweeping the men’s singles honours across the Under-30 and Under-45 categories, before later pairing with Aburi Girls to capture the mixed doubles crown. Adisadel College made their mark in the seniors’ men’s singles, while Mfantsipim School showcased depth and coordination by winning the men’s doubles title.

In the women’s division, Achimota School delighted the hosts with victory in the Under-30 singles category, but Wesley Girls’ High School dominated the senior brackets, claiming both the Under-45 and Seniors women’s singles titles to cap an impressive showing.

Chairman of the Fundraising and Sponsorship Committee, Leslie Awere-Kyere, speaking to JoySports, highlighted the purpose behind the initiative.

“We had a walk and also invited schools to come and celebrate our centenary with us,” he said.
“We’ve come to collaborate, we have come to have a lot of fun, and there shall be more activities every month for the next two years, so we invite everybody to join Achimota to celebrate 100 years.”

Achimota School’s legacy is rooted in what is known as the Achimota Experiment, a visionary educational philosophy developed by Dr. James Emman Kwegyir Aggrey, Rev. Alexander Garden Fraser and Sir Gordon Guggisberg. The idea rejected education as being purely academic or vocational, instead promoting holistic development through the balanced training of the head, the hand and the heart.

Sport formed a central pillar of this philosophy, serving as a practical classroom for discipline, teamwork, service and leadership. Through competitive activity, students strengthened both body and character, learning endurance, mental toughness, fair play and respect for authority — values that extend far beyond the field of play.

Over the next two years, the Old Achimotan Association will continue to collaborate with various schools through sport, not only in celebration of Achimota’s centenary but also in support of youth development and the legacy of sporting icons who have raised high the flag of Ghana.
