Lawyer for the Rastafarian students, Ras Tetteh Wayo, has accused Achimota School of not having a proper defence in their appeal to the court’s ruling.
Following yesterday's High Court ruling which held that the religious rights of the applicants had been violated by the School Management, ordering Achimota School to enrol the two Rastafarian students.
The Board of Governors of Achimota School, however, responded via a press release saying they disagreed with the court's decision and had therefore directed its lawyers to appeal against the ruling.
Reacting to this on PM: Express, Ras Wayo stated that although the School has the right to appeal to the courts over its ruling, he doesn't believe their appeal has any merit.
“I just saw the publication and they simply said they disagree with the ruling, they haven’t really given reasons, I have not seen much details as to what they mean by disagreeing with the ruling so maybe when they file their so-called appeal I can see what they mean that they disagree,” he said.
Mr Wayo further stated that the press release signed by the Governing Council of the School signed by an un-named Board Chairman questions the seriousness of their appeal.
“We are not joking here, we are trying to resolve a matter of high national importance," he stated.
"If you have a letter of such nature coming from the Board of Governors like a school of Achimota School where the Board of Governors made up of acclaimed senior citizens...seasoned senior citizens who have got the cause to bring such rules into being and if we have a letter from the Chairman of such a Board and the letter is just signed Chairman, Board of Governors. The Chairman, Board of Governors, is he a ghost, is he a real human being? We are not joking," he added.
He emphasised that the School wants “to enter into a protracted trial… because appeal is of right. They just feel that they have to appeal [and] get it back to court."
He said the Chairman of the Achimota Board is not just an ordinary citizen. Therefore finds is unusual for the letter to be signed without a name attached.
"Prof Aryitey is the former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana in this country. He represented Achimota in the whole process...Who is the Chairman? Who is the Board of Governors? Why what is he afraid of? Why is he not putting his or her name there? So the citizens will know that Mr so so so and so I have signed this thing I disagree with the court ruling.”
