Construction of the National Cathedral is expected to begin on Thursday, March 5, with a symbolic laying of a foundation stone.
President Nana Akufo-Addo at a ceremony in Accra will lay the foundation stone at the site at Ridge, marking the start of the construction of the edifice which has heavily divided the nation.
Speaking to JoyNews’ Mamavi Owusu Aboagye, Secretary to the Board of Trustees, Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng said they are still receiving pledges and monies from donors toward the construction.
He says the legal challenges would not stop the project.
“We have won three cases in the Supreme Court,” he asserted, adding, “the Cathedral will surely be built.”
He said two more buildings still standing on the site, the Passports office and the Malian Embassy would soon go down, explaining that the Malian building has diplomatic implication so they are going through the processes.
The Akufo-Addo government has also promised seed money toward the building. Rev. Boateng said the money has not been disbursed yet but they are expecting it soon.
He also said in some four months, the exact cost of the project would be known and it would be revealed to the public; however, it is estimated to cost some $100million.
“We have nothing to hide,” he said.
Dignitaries across the country and the world, including donors, are expected to grace the “groundbreaking” on Thursday.
