Pressure group Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) has described as hypocritical widespread condemnation of the Member of Parliament for Assin North Kennedy Agyapong.
The MP has been charged with treason after he declared war on an Accra radio station Oman FM following what he said were unprovoked attacks on supporters of the New Patriotic Party in the ongoing biometric registration exercise.
Agyapong also accused the police of looking on as members of his party were being butchered by thugs in the ruling party.
In what many described as inflammatory, the NPP firebrand urged his supporters to also go on rampage in their stronghold if the attacks on his supporters continued in Accra.
He was arrested Monday, charged with treason Tuesday and due to appear in court on Wednesday to open his defense.
Civil society groups, political analysts as well religious groups have been quick to condemn the comments of the Assin North MP.
But at a press conference in Accra the pressure group aligned to the opposition party said the comments by the Assin North MP were merely “reactionary”.
Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie who addressed the conference said the condemnation of the MP by the Christian Council, Dr Kpessah Whyte, the Centre for Democratic Development could only be sentimental and hypocritical.
Joy News’ Francis Abban who was present at the conference reported Dr Afriyie as saying that the crux of the matter is the continued violence in the ongoing biometric registration exercise and that must be addressed.
Dr Afriyie also implored the police to liaise with civil society groups to find lasting solution to the violence that has characterized the registration exercise.
