Political pressure group Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) says it wants to draw attention to what it calls President Mills’ “arrogant determination not to listen to the concerns of Ghanaians.” AFAG says it is hitting the streets Tuesday, August 4, 2009 to protest against the depreciating living conditions of Ghanaians. A leading member of AFAG, Daniel Marfo Ofori-Atta told Joy FM’s Super Morning Show hosted by Evans Mensah that the group wanted to hold the president to public morality. He said after promising Ghanaians a better Ghana, President Mills was now presiding over the worst form of poor conditions of service. While Ghanaians were promised a drastic reduction in fuel prices, the price of the commodity had ironically been increased drastically. He rehashed World Bank conditionalities – removal of subsidies on utilities, freeze on public sector employment – which have further imposed hardship on the citizenry. According to the Ghanaian Observer newspaper, the demonstrators will converge at Obra Spot, Kwame Nkrumah Circle at 6 a.m. tomorrow. They will proceed from the Obra Spot through the Kwame Nkrumah Avenue to the Farisco Traffic Lights. They will then turn left to the hall of the Trades Union and proceed through the Ministries. They will terminate at the Hearts Park, opposite the Department of National Lotteries, where various speakers will address them. "It is clear that the government is at its wits end finding solutions to the suffering of the people. From the astronomic increases in the price of petrol to the shortage of premix fuel for fishermen, the list of promise and fail by President Mills is growing taller by the day." "Ghanaians have really been deceived by the Mills administration and the NDC. If you look at the promises they made in the NDC's manifesto and what we are seeing on the ground today, it exposes a politics of deceit. They ought to be told and exposed for Ghanaians to know that politicians should not be allowed to take us for a ride again," the paper quotes a leading member of AFAG as saying. Tuesday's demonstration should have taken place sometime last month but the Greater Accra Regional Police Command citing challenges due to the visit of President Obama asked that it should be rescheduled.
