Pro-New Patriotic Party (NPP) pressure group the Alliance For Accountable Governance (AFAG) has postponed its planned demonstration in light of what it says were irregularities characterizing the December 7 elections. The group was expected to demonstrate on Friday, saying it had already notified the police. But officials of the AFAG say the police have asked them to suspend their demonstration because the security agencies are embarking on a special countrywide operation on the same day.A leading member of AFAG, Davis Opoku, expressed disappointment at the decision of the police when he spoke to Joy News.“It is an unfortunate development especially when we have fulfilled our constitutional obligation…to inform the police. We did that on Monday, we met with the police and they gave us the green light.“So what is happening in our country, that a civil society group intends to embark on a civil action on a mission that has no repercussion on the peace of this country and the President can order that the security agencies should embark on armory display…”?“That is the least thing that should happen to a democratic country like Ghana,” Davis observed. He insisted that AFAG would not relent in expressing its dissatisfaction with the conduct of the 2012 polls and to tell the world that “we’ve been shortchanged as a nation.”
