A middle-aged woman has died after being struck by an Afcon test train at Saki Bediako Junction on the Tema-Mpakadan railway in Kpone Katamanso.
The immediate circumstances surrounding the accident remain unclear.
Authorities are yet to determine whether the victim was attempting to cross the tracks or was unaware of the oncoming train.
Eyewitnesses have called for better safety measures along the railway to prevent further incidents. Officials are expected to launch an investigation into the tragic incident.
Tema-Mpakadan Standard Guage Railway Line
In November 2024, government commissioned the Tema-Mpakadan Standard Guage Railway Line, executed by Afcons Infrastructure. The project cost is approximately US$447 million.
The 100km rail network project includes seven-passenger stations, a 300-meter railway bridge over the Volta River, which is the first-of-its-kind in the country, two rail head facilities, four rail bridges, 11 road under bridges and 22 road over bridges.
The project is expected to help decongest roads and will enhance the efficiency of port operations at Tema, reducing the heavy dependency on road transport, and long-distance freight and passenger movement.
