The 24th African Senior Athletics Championships was officially launched in Accra on Wednesday, marking the start of preparations for the continental showpiece.
Ghana is set to welcome some of Africa’s finest track and field athletes, with global stars such as Letsile Tebogo, Faith Kipyegon and Beatrice Chebet expected to headline the competition.
The championships will take place from May 12 to May 17, 2026, at the University of Ghana Stadium in Accra.
Speaking at the launch, Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, stressed the importance of investing in athletics infrastructure across the country.
“Athletics remains a sport that can galvanize our nation and drive development if we make the right investments,” he said.
“It is not right that some regions in Ghana do not have proper tracks for our budding athletes to train on. Accra 2026 must provide a platform for our young athletes to see what is possible. That is why we must create opportunities for them to witness what the senior athletes are doing. It will serve as a source of motivation.”
This will be the first time Ghana hosts the African Senior Athletics Championships, with the country hoping the event will highlight its organizational strength and growing sports infrastructure while inspiring the next generation of athletes.
