Acting Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, has directed all commanders in the country to increase police presence in areas around financial institutions.
According to the Director-General of Police Public Affairs, the decision is to deal with the emerging trend where men on motorbikes trail bank customers to rob them.
ACP Kwasi Ofori believed that marking banking areas as key locations will “ward off robbers and criminals.”
Within the last few weeks, Ghana has witnessed many attacks where victims are trailed and robbed of the money they had just withdrawn from the bank.
Two days ago, a 73-year-old man was shot in the leg by four armed robbers who had been trailing him from the bank and bolted with the cash he had gone to withdraw.
The incident which occurred at Cape Coast in the Central Region left many eyewitnesses in shock and panic.
But ACP Ofori allayed fears by assuring the citizens that the police is working earnestly to clamp down on the security crisis.
“They [robbers] have noticed that Accra is becoming a no-go area, so now they are looking for other sub-targets, but the police are rolling out a lot of programmes that will contain all,” he assured.
