Agric officers fear a looming food crisis following the invasion of army worms in the country and want a war declared immediately to fight the canker.They say the country has only a week to begin that war or risk been hit by a severe food crisis.The worms reportedly migrated from Togo the past few weeks and have succeeded in causing pain to thousands of farmers by eating up their crops.On Friday, farmers from Garu Timpane in the Upper East Region joined thousands of other farmers in the Dangbe East in the Greater Accra region and those in the Central Region to mourn the loss of their investment into the food crops following attack by the worms.The worms had already wrecked havoc in the Volta Region where over 2000 rice farmers had their crops completely destroyed.Paul Ayagiba, Director of Agriculture in the Garu Timpane District confirmed the worm attack of the crops in an interview with Joy News.He said the farmers brought samples of the ravaged food crops as well as the worms into the office early Friday as proof of invasion by the worm.He feared the country will gradually slip into food crisis if steps are not taken to fight the migration of the worms.Whilst the rain could help in ameliorating the canker, Ayagiba said the country cannot depend on the providence of God to deal with the worm attack.He said he has drawn the attention of the national officers to help in the fight of the canker.The Deputy General Secretary of the Agricultural Workers Union, Edward Karowe said a state of emergency has to be declared to combat the army worm invasion.He said there will be a precarious food crisis, especially in the Northern sector if the country adopts a lethargic approach to the canker.He said the country must secure spraying equipments to get rid of the worms and seek international support if that will fight the migration and spread of the worms.Edward Karowe said the country has a only to fight this war.
