The Member of Parliament for the Bimbila Constituency in the Northern Region has rubbished statement made by the Deputy Minister of Information James Agyenim-Boateng that he would be arrested should there be any security breaches in the area.
Dominic Nitiwul told Asempa News he had picked up credible information on some looming security issues that, for national interest, he sought to inform persons in charge of National Security.
He described as unfortunate threats of arrest issued by the Deputy Information Minister saying he will not sit by and allow security matters of concern to escalate to unimaginable levels.
According to the MP, the tension has been precipitated by the arrest, detention and subsequent trial of a 26-year-old Kokomba man who allegedly injured a Nanumba man.
He warned that the situation could degenerate into ethnic conflict if measures were not put in place to squelch the tension.
Mr. Nitiwul said as a “responsible Member of Parliament", he informed the regional minister and thence to the Deputy Majority Leader in Parliament in a bid to resolve the situation, "but if these steps taken to resolve them are seen as a person who will foment trouble then it’s unfortunate”.
“I cannot keep quiet over such an issue… It is only a novice in security matters who will respond in the manner Mr. Agyenim Boateng did.”
The Bimbilia MP, however, expressed appreciation to the National Security outfit for taking pragmatic steps to find solution to the problem.
Agyenim-Boateng had told myjoyonline.com that the pronouncement from the Member of Parliament, Dominic Nitiwul clearly constitute incitement.
“It is intended to incite the people of the area to breach the peace and I have said in very clear and unambiguous words that the state security authorities are watching and are following his pronouncements.”
He emphasized that “if the peace in that area is breached, honourable Dominic Nitiwul will be answerable for that.”
Mr Agyenim-Boateng asserted that the Bimbilla MP’s comments were “calculated at stifling the judiciary from doing its lawful duties.”
