The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences Ghana, in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES) (National STEM Resource Unit) and the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), will commemorate the International Day of Mathematics (IDM) 2026 under the global theme “Mathematics and Hope” and the national campaign “Mɛtumi Ayɛ Maths!” (I Can Do Maths!)
The campaign theme of hope in various translations including “Manyɛ Mafee Maths”, “N ni tooi niŋ Maths”, “Mate ŋu awɔ Maths” among others, highlights the transformative role of mathematics as a discipline that is accessible to everyone and capable of unlocking opportunity, innovation and resilience. It emphasizes the importance of demystifying mathematics for young learners and fostering confidence in their abilities and hope in their mathematical potential. Through this initiative, learners from upper primary to senior high school levels are encouraged to rediscover confidence in mathematics and to see it not only as an academic subject, but also as a powerful tool for problem-solving, innovation and national development.
As part of the IDM 2026 celebration and campaign, outreach activities are being organised in schools across several regions of Ghana, including Accra, Ashanti, Northern, Oti, Eastern, Western and Volta Regions. These engagements are facilitated by the Ghana Education Service as well as alumni and teachers from the AIMS Master’s in Mathematical Sciences Program for Teachers (MMST), who are leading interactive learning sessions designed to spark curiosity and build enthusiasm for mathematics among students.
The nationwide activities culminate in a Grand National Commemoration taking place at the Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS), Western Region – Takoradi, on 13th March 2026 at 9:00 AM.
The event brings together students, teachers, education leaders and key stakeholders to celebrate the transformative role of mathematics through engaging and interactive activities, including:
• Mathematics role-play and creative art competitions
• Speed-round problem-solving contests
• Innovation exhibitions demonstrating practical applications of mathematics
• An awards ceremony recognising outstanding students and teachers
These activities ignite curiosity, promote creativity in mathematics learning, and encourage students to explore future pathways in STEM fields.
Through this collaboration, AIMS Ghana, the Ghana Education Service and the Ghana Education Trust Fund, reaffirm their shared commitment to strengthening mathematics education in Ghana and inspiring the next generation to see mathematics as a subject of possibility, confidence and hope.
