Polls have opened to voters in the Akatsi South Constituency of the Volta region, who will be electing a member of parliament to represent them.
The seat became vacant following the elevation of incumbent Edward Doe Adjaho to the position of Speaker of Parliament.
The National Democratic Congress’s Bernard Ahiafor, the Progressive People Party’s Anthony Tsikata and independent candidate Evans Gadeto are competing for the slot.
The main opposition New Patriotic Party is boycotting this election in light of the fact that, as suggested in its presidential candidate’s petition challenging the results of the 2012 presidential election, the party does not trust the Electoral Commission to oversee a fair contest.
Akatsi District Electoral Officer Francis Denu told Joy News that everything is set for the by-election, which he said would run smoothly until after 5pm, when the winner will be declared.
