The Ghana National Association of Private Schools (GNAPS) has appealed to the government to extend relief packages to private schools affected by floods caused by the controlled spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong dams.
The President of GNAPS, Prof. Damascus Tuurosong appealed when his outfit presented an undisclosed amount of money and stationery worth GHȼ50,000 to affected private schools in the North, Central, and South Tongu Districts of Volta region.
The floods caused devastation to communities along the lower Volta basin, left thousands displaced, destroyed schools, and disrupted livelihoods.

He asserted that the government through its relevance agencies only made provision of relief interventions to public schools to enable them to resume academic activities, neglecting private schools which were equally affected by the floods in the Volta region.
“Now we have a disaster situation and in a disaster situation, you do not ask what type of schools the children attend, you go ahead and assist all children, all Ghanaian children who are attending all manner of institutions. But here within the Volta region, what we have observed is that attention is being given to state schools, public schools to the neglect of the private schools in this disaster situation”, he lamented.
Prof. Tuurosong, therefore, demanded that the same amount of relief intervention provided to public schools should be made available to private schools in the affected areas to cushion them in these difficult times.
Management of some of the affected private schools said the floods have caused them great loss not only to their infrastructure but also enrollment, as some students have left for other schools.
Some of the schools are currently taking shelter under threes as they struggle to provide academic training for future generations.
