The Akuapem North Municipal Assembly is instituting measures to encourage households to produce, at least, one tertiary graduate each within the next five years.
The initiative is part of efforts to arrest falling standards, especially, at the Basic level.
Students will benefit from special evening classes while deserving ones will get scholarship packages with teachers receiving additional motivational allowances.
Dubbed ‘Produce a Graduate in your House’, the assembly targets Junior High School students as the baseline.
Parents and other relatives will be expected to enforce regulations for successful implementation.
The municipal area recorded zero per cent passes in Basic Education Certificate Examinations last year.
Municipal Chief Executive, George Opare–Addo, told Nhyira Fm the programme will be supported by the Education and Local Government ministries.
He said when the students go home after school, they are expected to do some more reading between 7 and 8:30 pm. "We are targeting families. We are going to meet opinion leaders, family heads and we are targeting those in form 1.”
According to him, the assembly has instituted a scholarship package for brilliant but needy students in the area.
Though sanctions are being proposed for recalcitrant parents, officials believe mutual understanding among stakeholders will form the basis for success.
Mr. Opare-Addo appealed to residents to support the worthy cause.
